Design Workshop Mar 6, 2003

Stanford University

220 Panama St

Ventura Hall, Room V17

The purpose of the workshop is to demonstrate and discuss the prototype in progress, as well as discuss further issues with regard to the design of the system. These quotations from Pam and Pierre Omidyar provide some guidance as to our goals.

An Uplift Academy which finds and organizes uplift ideas, providing a simple web-based portal for communities and individuals wishing to participate, as well as assisting in the management of the elevator ideas.

A Social Network, Reputation, and Complementary Currency mechanism which supports a "trustraising" approach to allow the most reputable and successful patterns of uplift to thrive.

An Uplift Collaboratory to explore the technology to syndicate and aggregate uplift ideas using Topic Map technologies.

Schedule

9:30    Technical discussion.  This will include a technical discussion of the underlying technology, a demonstration of the current state of the prototype, and a survey of other tools and technologies which may be of interest.

1:00- 3:00 General discussion:    Larry Harvey, founder of the Burning Man organization will be presenting their "lessons learned" in developing a self-organizing community based on a gift economy - the annual Burning Man event in the Nevada desert which attracts 30,000 people.  This will serve as a backdrop for discussions on how an Uplift Academy could support Uplift communities.

This workshop is a follow on meeting to the Feb 2003 design workshop at Stanford, and a continuation of the meetings held by GivingSpace at the Benton Foundation, Santa Fe Institute, and Asilomar.

Registration

Please register and join our social network "starter kit".  You will be given 100 Friendly Favors "Thankyous" - part of the complementary currency we will be using in the prototype.
